The Area

Gunnerside is a village in
Video from http://outdoornation.org.uk Swaledale, North Yorkshire, situated between the River Swale and its tributary, Gunnerside Beck. Gunnerside Ghyll (or Gunnerside Gill), a smaller valley running northwards, at right angles to the Swale valley (Swaledale), was the site of a major leadmining industry in Swaledale until the late nineteenth century.

As well as The Kings Head, Gunnerside is home to a Methodist Chapel, a primary school(which has recently joined with the primary school in Reeth), a village hall and a working smithy/museum. Local employment centres around, hill/sheep farming, gamekeeping, tourism and construction, the latter concerned chiefly with the maintenance of traditional stone-built field walls, houses and barns. Recreational acivities in the area include shooting, walking, cycling and fishing. Visit our links page for links regarding these.

A good 'overview' of, current local weather conditions can be obtained by looking at the 'Hazel Brow' webcam, in Low Row and the 'Inglebrough' webcam - the latter showing conditions on the hills.

The Dissyllable of this place name springs from the Norse "Gunner", which means battle or strife, adoted as a proper name.
Gunner is one of the great heroes of Scandinavian Saga's; and in his personality we find all that courage, manliness and defiance of death can bestow upon a mortal.

Gunnerside is as yet unaltered and un-spoilt in the primitive beauty that is all it's own. The Beck bridge, with the village grouped around it, is the hub or pivot of the scene, the gossip ground where the dalesfolk gather and linger makes a complete picture, and one full of light when the sun-shine is upon it, as full of awful warning and threat when the skies are "of lead" with the hills and the north-wester winds, its horn or wail or requiem.
